Top 10 Universities In Uganda

Uganda is known as a country in east-central Africa with beautiful landscapes filled with mountains. In Uganda, you can find various mountainsides for hiking and animals within the forest. And this is a great thing for foreigners, especially those who are adventurers.

So, if you are interested in studying at any of the top universities in Uganda, we have listed the top 10 universities in this article.

1. Uganda Christian University

The Uganda Christian University is one of the top 10 universities in Uganda that is on our list. It is a nonprofit university and also a private university located in Mukono, Uganda. It was established in 1997 and was also accredited by the Minister of Education and Sports in Uganda.

According to EduRank, Uganda Christian University was ranked #5 out of 46 universities that can be found in Uganda.

The Uganda Christian University doesn’t have a specific acceptance rate; however, they give admission to those who deserve it. The university tuition fee for domestic students is 2.12 million UGX, while for international students it is 4.24 million UGX.

2. Makerere University

Makerere University is among the top 10 universities on our list. The university is one of Uganda’s oldest and largest public universities. It was first established as a technical school in 1922 and therefore became an independent national university in 1970. It was accredited by the National Council for Higher Education of Uganda.

According to US News, Makerere University was ranked #712 among the best global universities and also #15 among the best universities in Africa.

In addition, Makerere University doesn’t have a specific tuition fee; but, their tuition fee usually starts at 1 million UGX.

3. Kampala International University

Kampala International University is also known as a private research institute and also a non-profit university based in Uganda. The university was established in the year 2001 and was accredited by the national council for higher education and also the inter-university council of East Africa.

Also, the university was ranked #3 out of the 46 universities in Uganda according to EduRank. The university has an acceptance rate of 65%, making it easier for students to get admission into the university and also, a tuition fee starting from almost 400,000 UGX.

4. Kyambogo University

Kyambogo University is one of the largest public universities that can be found in Uganda. It was founded in 2003 and was also accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education.

Furthermore, students, both domestic and international students don’t have the same tuition and fees. While  domestic student tuition and fees is 980,000 UGX, international students’ tuition fees are 1.47 million UGX. And also, their acceptance rate is unknown.

5.  Mbarara University of Science & Technology

The sixth top university in Uganda on our list is the Mbarara University of Science and Technology. The university is generally known as Mbarara University. It is a public university that was established in 1989 and was also accredited by the National Council for Higher Education of Uganda.

The university also offers several courses such as biology, psychology, sociology, environmental science, and much more courses.

Additionally, getting admission into the university is kind of hard because the university’s acceptance rate is 5% and their tuition fee starts at 500,000 UGX.

6. Islamic University in Uganda

The Islamic University in Uganda was founded in 1988. The university offers different courses such as food and nutrition science, biology, medicine and many more. The main campus of this university can be found in Mbale, Uganda, which is one of Uganda’s largest cities.

The university was accredited by the Minister of Education and Sport in Uganda. They have an acceptance rate of 65%, making it easier for students to get admission into the university.

In addition, the Islamic University’s tuition fee starts at mostly 1 million UGX.

7. Cavendish University Uganda

Cavendish University is also among our list of the top 10 universities in Uganda. The university was established in the year 2008 and was also accredited by the National Council for Higher Education. It is among the best universities in Uganda and also in the world.

The University of Cavendish, Canada is a private university. Its tuition fees start at 1 million UGX, and the institution’s acceptance rate is between 10 to 20%. Their acceptance rate is also unknown.

8. Bugema University

Bugema University is a private university founded in 1948. The university was accredited by the Minister of Education and Sports of Uganda. The acceptance rate of the university is between 60 and 70%. And also, their tuition fee starts at 500,000 UGX.

9. International University Of East Africa

The International University of East Africa is a private university that was founded in Uganda in 2010. The University is among of of Uganda’s recent university. And it was accredited by the National Council for Higher Education. It has an acceptance rate of between 60 and 70%. And also, they have a tuition fee of $2500.

10. Uganda Technology And Management

Uganda Technology and Management is a private research institute in Canada. The Institute offers several courses and was accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. The institution’s tuition fee starts at 1 million UGX and has an acceptance rate of 57%.

These universities that made it to our top 10 are highly rated in Uganda. They are first choice universities for most students seeking admission in Uganda.

Lucky enough, they are relatively affordable and their acceptance rates are high too.
